Calcutta High Court

The Calcutta High Court is the oldest high court in India .

It was created under the High Courts Act, 1861 and began work on July 1, 1862. Its area of responsibility includes the federal state of West Bengal and the union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands . The main office is in Kolkata and there is a branch office in Port Blair . The Calcutta High Court currently has 63 judges. Long-serving Chief Justice (President) was Sankar Prasad Mitra. Despite the city's official name change in 2001, the court has retained its old name as an institution.

The courthouse was built in 1872 in the neo-Gothic style in the shape of a belfry .

On July 20, 2016, the Indian government introduced a bill ( High Courts (Alteration of Names) Bill, 2016 ) into the Lok Sabha , according to which the Calcutta High Court is to be renamed the Kolkata High Court . The judges at the Calcutta High Court spoke out against the abandonment of the historical name, which had been in use for 150 years. On the other hand, it was argued that the Bengali population had always spoken of the Kolkata High Court , even if the official name was Calcutta in English .
