Bhola Paswan Shastri

Bhola Paswan Shastri ( Hindi : भोला पासवान शास्त्री ; * June 1914 in Bairgachhi, Purnia District , Bihar and Orissa Province, British India , today: Bihar ; † September 10, 1984 in Patna , Bihar) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress ( INC), who became the first Dalit Chief Minister of Bihar and held this office three times. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha and between 1973 and 1974 Minister for Public Works, Housing and Urban Development in the cabinet of Indira Gandhi II .

Life

Bhola Paswan Shastri, son of Shri Dhusar Paswan, belongs to the Dalit , the descendants of the Indian natives Adivasi , who according to the religious-dogmatic distinction in Hinduism between ritually “pure” and “impure” social groups as so-called “untouchables” from the caste system of warlike Indo-Aryan immigrants or conquerors are often excluded to this day. As the successor to Bindeyyeshwari Prasad Mandal of the Soshit Dal , he was on 23 February 1968 as the first Dalit first time even Chief Minister of Bihar and held this position until June 28, 1968 after which it to set up a so-called presidential administration ( President's rule ) came. On May 31, 1972 Shastri became a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian Parliament (Bhāratīya saṃsad) for the Indian National Congress (INC ) , to which he initially belonged until April 2, 1982. As the successor to Uma Shankar Dikshit , he took over the office of Minister for Public Works, Housing and Urban Development in the Indira Gandhi II cabinet on February 5, 1973 and remained in this post until October 10, 1974, when Kotha Raghuramaiah succeeded him. He was also to succeed Kamalapati Tripathi between 24 February and his replacement by Kamalapati Tripathi on 23 March 1978 as Leader of the opposition briefly Opposition leader of for in the Rajya Sabha and was in August 1978 Chairman of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes relevant Commission for listed castes and registered tribal communities of the Government of India.

He was married to Shrimati Devaki Devi. The Bhola Paswan Shastri Agricultural College in Purnia , part of the Bihar Agricultural University, was named in his honor.
