Bhagavan Das

Bhagavan Das (born January 12, 1869 in Varanasi , India , † September 18, 1958 ) was an Indian politician, theosophist and scholar.

Bhagavan Das was born in 1869 into a wealthy merchant family. In 1888, at the age of 19, he obtained a Master of Arts degree in philosophy. Attracted by a speech by Annie Besant , he joined the Theosophical Society (TG) in 1894 and followed the Theosophical Society Adyar (Adyar-TG) after the division of the TG in 1895 . In July 1898 he was involved in the founding of the theosophical Central Hindu College in Benares (today Varanasi ).

Within the Adyar-TG he was an opponent of the cult of Jiddu Krishnamurti and the resulting Order of the Star in the East , which was led by Annie Besant and Charles W. Leadbeater . At times he headed the Indian section of the Adyar-TG.

That supported the campaign of non-cooperation , which led to the boycott of u. a. Banaras Hindu University , which emerged from Central Hindu College , and became a major politician of the Indian National Congress (INC) during this time . He was chairman of the INC Provincial Committee for the United Provinces and a member of the All-India Congress Committee . In 1955 he was awarded the Bharat Ratna for his services to Indian education and to Indian literature .

Bhagavan Das died on September 18, 1958. On his 100th birthday the Indian Post dedicated a commemorative stamp to him.
