Purnia is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .
The area is 3229 km². The administrative seat is the city of Purnia .
history
The district was created as a modern administrative unit in 1770 by the British East India Company .
Three districts were separated from the Purnia district: Katihar (1976), Araria and Kishanganj (1990).
population
The population is 3,264,619 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 28.33% and was therefore very high. Purnia has a gender ratio of 921 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 51.08% in 2011, an increase of almost 15 percentage points compared to 2001. Reading skills are thus well below the national average. Almost 61% of the population are Hindus and around 39% are Muslim .
Only 10.5% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Purnia with 282,248 inhabitants.
economy
Agricultural products in Purnia include rice , corn , legumes , wheat and oilseeds . About a third of the area is used for growing rice. Vegetables and watermelons are also harvested.
