Saharsa is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 1687 km². The administrative seat is the city of Saharsa .

geography

Saharsa is surrounded to the west by the Koshi River, which is rich in fish . Saharsa is famous for its high number of mango and lychees . The Saharsa District includes the following subdivisions: Saharasa Sadar and Simri Bakhtiyarpur .

history

The district is part of the historic Mithila region .

The Saharsa District used to be part of the Munger and Bhagalpur Districts . On April 1, 1954, it was made a separate district. In 1981 and 1991, the Madhepura and Supaul districts were split off from the existing Saharsa district, reducing the area and population.

population

The population is 1,900,661 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 26.02% and was therefore very high. Saharsa has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 53.20% in 2011, an increase of almost 14 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Almost 86% of the population are Hindus and around 14% are Muslim . In the district, the Maithili language is spoken by the majority of residents.

Only 8.2% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Saharsa with 156,540 inhabitants.
