Vaishali is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 2036 km². The administrative seat is the city of Hajipur .

history

The ancient city of Vaishali in the district was founded in the 5th century BC. The capital of the Republic of the Licchavis , which belonged to the Vajji Confederation .

Vaishali became a district when it was separated from Muzaffarpur in 1972

population

The population is 3,495,021 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 28.57% and was therefore very high. Vaishali has a gender ratio of 895 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district has a literacy rate of 66.60% in 2011, an increase of almost 16 percentage points compared to 2001. Despite the high increase, reading ability is still below the national average. Almost 90% of the population are Hindus and around 10% are Muslims . The Bhojpuri language is common in the district.

Only 9.7% of the population live in cities. The largest city was Hajipur with 147,688 inhabitants.
