Madhepura became a district in 1981 when it was separated from Saharsa .
population
The population is 2,001,762 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 31.12% and was therefore very high. Madhepura has a gender ratio of 911 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 52.25% in 2011, an increase of almost 16 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Just under 88% of the population are Hindus and around 12% are Muslims .
Almost 4.4% of the population live in cities.

According to official statistics, the Madhepura district is one of the 250 most backward districts in India, which is divided into a total of 640 districts. 2007–2012 Madhepura was one of the three poorest districts in Bihar, which is considered the poorest state in India.
