Begusarai is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

population

The population is 2,970,541 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 26.44% and was therefore very high. Begusarai has a gender ratio of 911 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 63.87% in 2011, an increase of almost 16 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 86% of the population are Hindus and around 14% are Muslim .

Almost 19.6% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Begusarai with 252,008 inhabitants.

According to official statistics, the Begusarai district is one of the 250 most backward districts in India, which is divided into a total of 640 districts. Nevertheless, in 2007-12 it was one of the three wealthiest districts in Bihar, which, however, is considered the poorest state in the country.
