Siwan is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .
The area is 2219 km². The administrative seat is the city of Siwan .
history
The Siwan District, in the west of Bihar State, was originally a subdivision of the Saran District , which in ancient times formed part of the Kosala Kingdom . Siwan became a full-fledged district when it was separated from Saran in 1976.
population
The population is 3,330,464 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 22.70% and was therefore very high. Siwan has a gender ratio of 988 women per 1000 men and thus a slight surplus of men. The district has a literacy rate of 69.45% in 2011, an increase of almost 18 percentage points compared to 2001. Almost 82% of the population are Hindus and around 18% are Muslims . The Bhojpuri language is common in the district.
Only 5.5% of the population live in cities. The largest city was Siwan with 135,066 inhabitants.
