Aurangabad is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 3305 km². The administrative seat is the city of Aurangabad .

history

Aurangabad became a district in 1972 when it was separated from Gaya .

population

The population is 2,540,073 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 26.18% and was therefore very high. Aurangabad has a gender ratio of 926 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 70.32% in 2011, an increase of almost 13 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the average in Bihar. Almost 90% of the population are Hindus and around 9% are Muslims .

Almost 9.3% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Aurangabad with 102,244 inhabitants.
