history
Lakhisarai became a district in 1994 when it was split off from Munger .

The population is 1,000,912 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 24.77% and was therefore very high. Lakhisarai has a gender ratio of 902 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 62.42% in 2011, an increase of almost 15 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 96% of the population are Hindus and around 4% are Muslims .
