Kishanganj is a district in the Indian state of Bihar . The district is part of the historic Mithila region .

The area is 1884 km². The administrative seat is the city of Kishanganj .

history

Kishanganj became a district in 1990 when it was separated from Purnia .

population

The population was 1,690,400 in 2011. The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 30.25% and was therefore very high. Kishanganj has a gender ratio of 946 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 55.46%, a strong increase of almost 24 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Almost 68% of the population are Muslims and around 31% are Hindus . Kishanganj is the only district in Bihar with a Muslim majority. The language in the district is Maithili .

Only 9.5% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Kishanganj with 105,782 inhabitants.
