Muzaffarpur is a district in the Indian state of Bihar . After Patna and Purba Champaran , it is the most populous district in Bihar.

The area is 3172 km². The administrative seat is the city of Muzaffarpur .

geography

The Gandak , Budhi Gandak , Bagmati and Lakhandayee rivers flow through the Muzaffarpur district . There are also many small streams that run through the district. The area is therefore prone to flooding . The district lies in the fertile part of the Ganges plain .

history

Today's Muzaffarpur District was created in the 18th century and named after Muzaffar Khan , an official in the service of the British.

population

The population is 5,099,371 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 28.14% and was therefore very high. Muzaffarpur has a gender ratio of 900 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 63.43% in 2011, an increase of almost 15 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is above the average of Bihar but below the national average. Almost 84% of the population are Hindus and around 16% are Muslim . The Bhojpuri language is common in the district.

Almost 7.9% of the population live in cities. The largest city in the district was Muzaffarpur with 126,158 inhabitants.

economy

There is industry mainly in the city of Muzaffarpur, where u. a. Railway wagons are manufactured. The rural areas are heavily dominated by agriculture , which provides the income for most of the people in the district. Are cultivated sugarcane , jute , rice , wheat , mangoes , lychees and vegetables . The main farm animals in the villages are cows , buffalo , goats and poultry .
