The population is 2,034,763 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 26.48% and was therefore very high. Banka has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 58.17% in 2011, an increase of almost 16 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 87% of the population are Hindus and around 12% are Muslim .
The district is almost exclusively rural, with only 3.5% of the population living in cities.

Banka is a largely agrarian economy and is considered the "rice bowl" of Bihar. The main crops are rice , wheat , corn and lentils .
