The population is 1,760,405 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 25.85% and was therefore very high. Jamui has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 59.79% in 2011, an increase of almost 17 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Almost 87% of the population are Hindus , around 12% are Muslims and around 0.5% are Christians .
Only 8.3% of the population live in cities.

According to official statistics, the Jamui district is one of the 250 most backward districts in India, which is divided into a total of 640 districts. The district belongs to the so-called Red Corridor of backward and poor areas, in which Naxalites are active due to the high inequality and quasi-feudal conditions.
