Madhubani is a district in the Indian state of Bihar . After Patna and Purba Champaran , it is the most populous district in Bihar.
The area is 3501 km². The administrative seat is the city of Madhubani .
history
Madhubani became a district in 1972 when it was separated from Darbhanga District . It is believed that Baliraajgadh , a place located in what is now the Madhubani district, was the capital of the ancient Mithila kingdom .
population
The population is 4,487,379 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 25.51% and was therefore very high. Madhubani has a gender ratio of 926 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 58.62% in 2011, an increase of almost 17 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus well below the national average. Almost 81% of the population are Hindus and around 18% are Muslim .
Only 3.6% of the population live in cities.
