Zurich Airport Region is a term that has recently been used more frequently, as the economic importance of Switzerland's largest airport is steadily increasing.

The Zurich airport region includes around 25 cities and municipalities in the canton of Zurich with over 200,000 inhabitants. Many of these communities belong geographically to the Glattal , which also includes some districts of the city of Zurich ( Oerlikon , Seebach , Affoltern , Hirzenbach , Saatlen and Schwamendingen Mitte ). The Zurich airport region in the broader sense, however, encompasses a much larger radius with more than two million inhabitants (see also: Zurich Metropolitan Region ).

Many construction projects of supraregional importance are currently being implemented in the nearer airport region of Zurich, others are being planned. In Dübendorf , the tallest high-rise for rental apartments in Switzerland (JaBee Tower) was moved into in mid-2019. In 2020, a modern destination with over 6,000 jobs will be created at Zurich Airport (The Circle). The architect of this large development is the Japanese Riken Yamamoto . The tenants will include Dufry , Horváth & Partners , Hyatt , Microsoft , Raiffeisen and the University Hospital Zurich . Part of the project is a nature park with an area of 80,000 square meters, which corresponds to 11 football fields.

Research and development is to be promoted with the planned Zurich Innovation Park - part of the Swiss Innovation Park. Dübendorf is planned as the location; The Federal Materials Testing and Research Institute (Empa) is already located in this municipality .

The main topics for the Innovation Park Zurich are defined as follows: life science and quality of life, engineering and the environment, digital technologies and communication. The park is intended to promote the merging of knowledge from Zurich's universities and technical colleges with the practical and market experience of leading companies. The Foundation Innovationspark Zürich is responsible for the construction and operation. It was founded in September 2015 by the Canton of Zurich , the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ( ETHZ ) and the Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB).

“Zurich Airport Region” (FRZ) is the name of the organization supported by the economy, municipalities and cities. It is intended to create sustainable added value through networking and location development in one of the most attractive economic areas in Europe. FRZ was founded as an association in 2011 and now has over 600 members. President of the association's board is René Huber (Mayor of Kloten). Christoph Lang is operationally in charge of the office. Lang is also the managing director of Airport City Zurich, which focuses on the dialogue between landowners and authorities ( spatial planning ). FRZ cooperates with local, regional, cantonal and national location promotion institutions. These include Switzerland Global Enterprise (S-GE) and Greater Zurich Area (GZA).

The following twelve cities and municipalities with over 130,000 employees have formally joined the Zurich Airport Region organization: Bassersdorf, Bülach, Dietlikon, Dübendorf, Kloten, Nürensdorf, Oberglatt, Opfikon, Rümlang, Wallisellen, Wangen-Brüttisellen and Winkel. Swissport International (Glattbrugg), Gategroup (Kloten), Dormakaba (Rümlang), SV Group (Dübendorf), SR Technics (Kloten), Hotelplan (Glattbrugg), Hewlett-Packard Switzerland (Dübendorf), Zurich Airport have their headquarters in the Zurich airport region AG (Kloten), Jumbo Baumarkt (Dietlikon), UPC Switzerland (Wallisellen), Coca-Cola HBC Switzerland (Brüttisellen), Edelweiss Air (Kloten), CSC Switzerland (Dübendorf), Canon Switzerland (Wallisellen), Qualipet (Dietlikon), Gamma Renax (Dübendorf), Infosys Consulting (Kloten), Microsoft Switzerland (Wallisellen), Ricoh Switzerland (Wallisellen), Tchibo Switzerland (Wallisellen), Vifor Pharma (Glattbrugg).

One of the best-known companies in the region is the listed Flughafen Zürich AG , which operates Zurich Airport. The total of around 280 companies at Zurich Airport employ 27,000 people and generate annual added value of 5 billion francs. The airport site is located north of the city of Zurich in the municipality of Kloten . The airport area also extends to the communities of Opfikon , Rümlang , Oberglatt and Winkel . The region with above-average population growth is not only a traffic junction, but also known as a shopping oasis with the two highest-turnover shopping centers in Switzerland, Glattzentrum in Wallisellen and Airport Zurich Shopping. This contrasts with the extensive local recreation areas, some of which are protected.
