history

The company was founded in 1865 as a retail store under the company name Weitnauer . In 1948, Weitnauer entered the duty-free business as a wholesaler. With the opening of its first duty-free shop in Paris in 1953, the company also began to operate as a retailer in this area. In 2003 the company was renamed Dufry and in the following year it was strategically realigned with travel retail as its core business. The wholesale business and non-core activities were sold. In December 2005 the company went public by means of an IPO .

In 2006, 2007 and 2008 Dufry made several major acquisitions abroad. This included the takeover of Brasif , the largest operator of duty-free shops in Brazil. With the Hudson Group , Dufry also took over a leading company in the North American market.

In 2014, the Swiss competitor Nuance was taken over for 1.55 billion Swiss francs. In 2015, Dufry took over the Italian company World Duty Free for 3.6 billion euros and thus expanded its stand in Europe and Asia.

The North American subsidiary Hudson Group went public in February 2018 .

The Chinese HNA Group acquired a 20.9 percent stake in Dufry in spring 2017, but reduced it to 3 percent in early 2019.
