history

The company was founded in 1996 under the initial name of Swissair Ground Services International AG as an independent subsidiary of the former Swissair . In 2000, the company operated at 130 locations in 25 countries, including at London Heathrow Airport , where it was responsible for ground handling.

In the context of the Swissair financial crisis , Swissport was initially taken over by the British private equity company Candover and in August 2005 by the Spanish construction company Ferrovial . At the end of 2010, Ferrovial sold Swissport to the French investment company PAI partners for 654 million euros .

In August 2013 Swissport announced the acquisition of the competitor Servisair. In December 2013, the takeover was approved by the European Commission subject to conditions .

In mid-2015, the French investment company PAI partners sold Swissport for 2.73 billion Swiss francs to the HNA Group based in Haikou, China.
