The Qualipet AG is a Swiss company in the field of pet - and riding needs operates. In addition to mail order via the Internet and catalog, Qualipet operates over 80 specialist pet stores across Switzerland and is the market leader in the Swiss specialist pet trade . The name Qualipet is made up of the words "quality" and "pet" ( English for pet) together.
Company history
Qualipet AG was founded in 1991 by Rolf Boffa. A mail order business had existed since 1984. In 1996, the company moved into the head office in Dietlikon near Zurich and, according to the company, opened the first pet store in Europe on over 1800 m².
The concept of a large, customer- and animal-friendly pet store, instead of small, traditional pet shops, met with approval. So far the branch network has been massively expanded.
In 2000, Qualipet took over the pet retail chain Zoo Tierfreund AG with 14 branches. Another merger took place in 2007 with the takeover of My Friend AG and its 13 branches.
In 2018 Qualipet was represented at 89 locations and is therefore the clear market leader in the Swiss pet trade. The company employs over 760 people (as of 2018), including over 60 apprentices . Qualipet generated sales of around 165 million Swiss francs in 2017 .
Rolf Boffa was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Award in 2010 . He received the “Entrepreneur of the Year” award in the service / retail category. In 2018 Qualipet was among the finalists of the Prix SVC and reached 4th place.
Qualipet Digital AG
In January 2011, Qualipet AG and the media company Ringier jointly founded Qualipet Digital AG. Both companies operated the mail order business, an e-shop , a community for animal lovers and an online animal magazine through the new company . In 2016 Qualipet AG took back the 50% stake from Ringier and is therefore 100% owner of Digital AG, which operates the online platform www.qualipet.ch.
According to its own information, Qualipet Digital AG aims to build the largest digital platform in Switzerland for products from the pet trade, with an online shop via smartphone application, advice and classifieds .
The community on qualipet.ch offers animal lovers z. B. the opportunities to exchange ideas, discuss topics or take part in photo competitions. The magazine section offers information on all aspects of animals.
Pet stores
Qualipet AG is represented with 89 pet stores (as of July 2018) in 21 of 26 cantons and in all language regions ( German-speaking Switzerland 71 branches, French- speaking Switzerland 15 branches, Italian Switzerland 3 branches). It is by far the largest Swiss chain store in the pet trade.
Most of the shops are located in industrial areas and shopping centers , but also in city centers. Most of them are designed in the style of a specialist store , occasionally with lavish shop design and decoration.
The offer is divided into the sectors of dog , cat , rodent , bird , aquarium / garden pond and terrarium . Under the name Qualihorse there is a department for riding equipment in around 60 branches. Depending on the point of sale, the range includes between 15,000 and 21,000 items.
In addition to pet food and accessories, most markets also carry live animals. The choice of animal species varies from branch to branch. Mostly they are rodents ( hamsters , guinea pigs , mice , etc.), dwarf rabbits as well as ornamental fish and other aquarium animals ( shrimps , apple snails , dwarf clawed frogs , etc.), sometimes also ornamental birds and terrarium animals ( snakes , lizards , turtles , frogs , tarantulas , etc.). Live food insects (house crickets , grasshoppers , fruit flies , mealworms, etc.) are also often offered.
Dogs, cats, ferrets , large parrots and marine fish are not for sale .
According to its own information, Qualipet sold over 61,000 animals in 2010 (not including ornamental fish and food insects).
Mail order
Qualipet operates a mail order business via catalog and an online shop. The catalog appears annually in German and French and includes accessories and pet food for all animal groups with a focus on dogs and cats.
criticism
In January 2011 Qualipet was from the TV show Kassensturz the Swiss television criticized cages for small animals to offer that do not meet the minimum legal requirements. The sale of these cages is not prohibited, but the customer is liable to prosecution if he uses them for keeping animals. Managing director Rolf Boffa assured that such cages will no longer be part of the range in future, unless the customers only use them as transport containers that are specially marked for this.
