Darbhanga is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 2279 km². The administrative seat is the city of Darbhanga .

history

In 1976, the Madhubani and Samastipur districts were split off from Darbhanga.

population

The population is 3,937,385 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 19.47% and was therefore very high. Darbhanga has a gender ratio of 911 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 56.56% in 2011, an increase of almost 12 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average and also below that of Bihar. Almost 77% of the population are Hindus and around 22% are Muslim . The Bhojpuri language is common in the district.

Only 9.7% of the population live in cities. The largest city was Darbhanga with 296,039 inhabitants.
