Pashchim Champaran is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 5228 km². The administrative seat is the city of Bettiah .

The population is 3,935,042 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 21.64% and was therefore very high. Saran has a gender ratio of 909 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 55.70% in 2011, an increase of almost 17 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average and below that of Bihar. Almost 77% of the population are Hindus and around 22% are Muslim . The Bhojpuri language is common in the district.

Only 10% of the population live in cities. The largest cities were Bettiah with 132,209 inhabitants and Bagaha with 112,634 inhabitants.
