The area is 2425 km². The administrative seat is the city of Supaul .
history
Supaul became a district in 1981 when it was separated from Saharsa .
population
The population is 2,229,076 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 28.66% and was therefore very high. Supaul has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 57.67% in 2011, an increase of almost 11 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus well below the national average. Almost 81% of the population are Hindus and around 18% are Muslim .
Only 4.7% of the population live in cities.
