Munger is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 1419 km². The administrative seat is the city of Munger .

history

Munger has seen five districts separated from his territory: Begusarai in 1976, Khagaria and Jamui in 1991; as well as the districts of Lakhisarai and Sheikhpura in 1994.

Today the district belongs to the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ".

population

The number of inhabitants in 2011 was 1,367,765. The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 20.21% and was therefore very high. Munger has a gender ratio of 876 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is typical for India. The district had a literacy rate of 70.46% in 2011 , an increase of almost 11 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the average in Bihar. Almost 92% of the population are Hindus and around 8% are Muslim .

Almost 27.8% of the population live in cities. The largest cities are Munger with 213,303 inhabitants and Jamalpur with 105,434 inhabitants.
