Munger ( Hindi मुंगेर and Bengali মুঙ্গের Muṅger ) is a city (Municipal Corporation) with about 250,000 inhabitants in the Indian state of Bihar . It is one of the oldest cities in Bihar State.
Location and climate
The city of Munger is located on the south bank of the Ganges approx. 180 km (driving distance) east of the city of Patna at an altitude of approx. 45 m . The climate is warm to hot; Rain (approx. 1060 mm / year) falls almost exclusively during the summer monsoon season .

About 81% of the population are Hindus and about 18.5% are Muslims ; the other religious communities ( Jains , Sikhs , Buddhists and Christians ) form small minorities. As usual with censuses in northern India, the male population is numerically around 14% higher than the female.
economy
Munger is one of the most important production sites in the region for heavy industry ( railways , weapons ); Traditionally, irrigation- dependent agriculture ( tobacco and dairy products ) naturally also plays an important role. The city is also known for the (Bihar School of Yoga ) founded in 1964 .
history
Although a few documents indicate an early settlement, Munger (old name Monghyr ) was probably only expanded or newly founded in the time of the Sultanate of Delhi (13th century); an imposing palace fortress stood here in the 17th century. During the period of the collapse of the Mughal Empire , the city was sacked by the Marathas and partially destroyed (1744). In the second half of the 18th century, the city came under the sovereignty of the Nawab of Bengal, and later under British rule .
Attractions
In the area of the largely destroyed fort there are still 3 mausoleums from Islamic times.
