Bhagalpur ( Hindi भागलपुर ) is a city in the Indian state of Bihar .

The city lies on the south bank of the Ganges and is the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The national highway NH 80 connects Bhagalpur with Patna, 190 km to the west . Bhagalpur was raised to the status of Nagar Palika in 1864 . Bhagalpur has been a Municipal Corporation ( Nagar Nigam ) since April 15, 1981 . The city is divided into 51 wards . In the 2011 census, the population was 400,000. Bhagalpur is the third largest metropolitan area in the state of Bihar. Bhagalpur is called the Silk City ("Silk City") of Bihar.
