Sitamarhi is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 2294 km². The administrative seat is the city of Sitamarhi .

history

According to Indian mythology , Sitamarhi is the birthplace of the goddess Sita . There is a temple in the district to honor her.

Sitamarhi became a district when it was separated from Muzaffarpur in 1972

population

The population is 3,423,574 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 27.62% and was therefore very high. Vaishali has a gender ratio of 899 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district has a literacy rate of 52.05% in 2011, an increase of almost 14 percentage points compared to 2001. Reading skills are thus well below the national average. Almost 78% of the population are Hindus and around 22% are Muslim . The Bhojpuri language is common in the district.

Only 5.6% of the population live in cities. The largest agglomeration was Sitamarhi with 106,093 inhabitants.
