The population was 656,246 in 2011. The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 30.25% and was therefore very high. Sheohar has a gender ratio of 893 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district had a literacy rate of 53.53% in 2011 , an increase of almost 18 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Almost 84% of the population are Hindus and around 15% are Muslim .
Only 4.3% of the population live in cities.
