history
Samastipur became a district in 1972 when it was separated from Darbhanga .
population
The population is 4,261,566 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 25.53% and was therefore very high. Samastipur has a gender ratio of 911 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 61.86% in 2011, an increase of almost 16 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus well below the national average. Almost 89% of the population are Hindus and around 11% are Muslim .
Only 3.5% of the population live in cities.
