Gopalganj has a gender ratio of 1021 women per 1000 men and is one of the few districts with a surplus of women. The district has a literacy rate of 65.47% in 2011, an increase of almost 18 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is slightly above the average in Bihar, but below the national average. Just under 83% of the population are Hindus and around 17% are Muslims . Hindi and Bhojpuri are predominantly spoken in the district.
