Nalanda is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 2355 km². The administrative seat is the city of Bihar Sharif .

history

Nalanda became a district in 1972 when it was separated from Patna .

population

The population is 2,877,653 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 21.39% and was therefore very high. Nalanda has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 64.43% in 2011, an increase of almost 11 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 93% of the population are Hindus and around 7% are Muslim .

Almost 15.9% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Bihar Sharif with 297,268 inhabitants.
