Araria is a district in the Indian state of Bihar . The district is part of the historic Mithila region .
The area is 2830 km². The administrative seat is the city of Araria .
history
Araria became a district in 1990 when it was separated from Purnia .
population
The population is 2,811,569 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 30.25% and was therefore very high. Araria has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district has a literacy rate of 53.53% in 2011, an increase of almost 18 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is still well below the national average. Almost 57% of the population are Hindus and around 43% are Muslim .
Only 6% of the population live in cities.
