Sitamarhi is a city in the state of Bihar in eastern India . It is the headquarters of the Sitamarhi district of the same name . Sitamarhi has the status of a City Council ( Nagar parishad ). The city is divided into 28 wards. It is located near the border with Nepal and is approximately 135 km from Bihar's capital Patna .

According to legends, Sitamarhi is the birthplace of the goddess Sita from the epic Ramayana , which gives the city its name.

Demographics

The city's population is 67,818 according to the 2011 census. Sitamarhi has a gender ratio of 886 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 77.34% in 2011. Almost 83.5% of the population are Hindus , around 16.2% are Muslims and around 0.2% belong to other religions. 15.0% of the population are children under 6 years of age. 7.3% of the population were part of the Scheduled Castes . In Sitamarhi the Maithili language is predominant.

Infrastructure

The National Highway 77 connects the area with the district Muzaffarpur and Patna. Other state roads connect it with the Madhubani district in the east and Sheohar in the west.

The train station of Sitamarhi is located at the distance of Darbhanga to Narkatiaganj .
