Madhubani is a city in the state of Bihar in eastern India . It is the headquarters of the Madhubani district of the same name . Madhubani has the status of a City Council ( Nagar parishad ). The city is divided into 30 wards. It is approximately 172 km from Bihar's capital, Patna . In Madhubani the languages Hindi , Maithili and Urdu are predominant.
The city is considered a cultural center for Maithili speakers in India and has produced its own artistic tradition.
Demographics
The city's population is 75,736 according to the 2011 census. Madhubani has a gender ratio of 899 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 74.04% in 2011, slightly above the regional and national average, but relatively low for a larger city. Almost 68.5% of the population are Hindus , about 30.8% are Muslims and about 0.7% belong to other religions. 15.5% of the population are children under 6 years of age. 6.9% of the population were part of the Scheduled Castes .
