Reidar Sandal (born March 24, 1949 in Vågsøy ) is a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). From 1995 to 1997 he was minister of church, education and research in his country.

Political career

Sandal was chairman of the youth organization Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF) in the province of Møre og Romsdal between 1969 and 1970 . From 1974 to 1975 he headed the AUF at the University of Bergen . From 1983 to 1990 he was in the Fylkesting in the province of Sogn og Fjordane .

In the Norwegian parliamentary elections in 1989, 1993 and 1997 Reidar Sandal was only the first Vararepresentant of Sogn og Fjordane. So he was always the highest-placed candidate in the party list of his province who did not make it into the Norwegian parliament in Storting . From October 1990 to December 1995, however, he was still a member of parliament, as he represented the then Minister Kjell Opseth there . In the period between October 1993 and December 1995 he was even deputy chairman of parliament, although he only sat as a representative in parliament.

On December 22, 1995, he was appointed Minister in the Ministry of Church, Education and Research. He held the office until October 17, 1997.

In 2001 as well as in 2009 he managed to move directly into the Storting. In his last legislative term, Sandal was part of the parliamentary group's executive committee from October 2005 to September 2009. He also headed the Finance Committee between December 2006 and September 2009.

Other activities

Sandal was CEO of Innovasjon Norge , Norway's national development bank , from 2010 to 2014 . From 2010 to 2017 he was chairman of the board of directors of the central bank Norges Bank .
