Gerd-Liv Valla (2009)

Gerd-Liv Valla (born January 25, 1948 in Korgen , Hemnes municipality ) is a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap) and trade unionist . In 1997 she was the Minister of Justice for her country.

education and profession

Valla studied political science at the University of Oslo between 1967 and 1977 . From 1977 to 1981 she taught social sciences at the teachers' college in Eik .

Political career

From 1990 to 1992 Valla worked as a personal advisor in the office of Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland . From January 1992 to January 1994 she was Minister of State there. On February 4, 1997, she was appointed Minister of Justice in the Jagland government. She held the office until the end of the government on October 17, 1997.

After the end of her time as minister, she became vice-chair of the Norwegian trade union federation Landsorganisasjonen i Norge (LO). From 2001 to 2007 she was the first woman and the first person with an academic background to chair the organization. In 2002 she was not elected to the presidency of the Norwegian Workers' Party, which was taken as a sign of her desire to separate the union from the party. In 2005, however, she became part of the board of directors, she was also considered an influential person in Jens Stoltenberg's election campaign and in his later government work. After allegations were leveled against her in 2007 that she was chairman of the union, she was investigated internally. After the investigation was over, she resigned from office.

For some time now, Valla has been expressing criticism of the Ap. For example, before the 2017 general election , she stated that she did not want to say which party she would vote after criticizing her party's climate policy. In January 2018, she also called on the party to take a left-wing course and not work with the Christian Democratic Kristelig Folkeparti .
