Turid Birkeland (born November 5, 1962 in Haugesund , Rogaland ; † December 24, 2015 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap), who was minister of culture between 1996 and 1997 .

Life

Turid Birkeland was a candidate of the Arbeiderpartiet 1986 member of the Storting and represented the interests of Oslo until 1989. During this time, between 1987 and 1989, she was initially vice-chairwoman of the Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF), the youth organization of the Labor Party, and, as successor to Jens Stoltenberg, from 1989 until she was replaced by Trond Giske in 1992, chairwoman of the AUF. In 1994 she was the leader of the yes action for the referendum for Norway to join the European Union (EU).

On October 25, 1996, Turid Birkeland was appointed by Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland as Minister of Culture in his government , to which she belonged until October 17, 1997.

After leaving the government, Turid Birkeland worked as program director of the state broadcaster NRK ( Norsk rikskringkasting ) , the private broadcaster TVNorge and Rubicon TV , before she was cultural director of NRK from 2001 to 2004. Afterwards she was director of the Risør Chamber Music Festival between 2004 and 2010 and at the same time she was a consultant for the telecommunications company Telenor from 2007 to 2012 . Most recently, she was director of the Rikskonsertene cultural organization from 2012 until her death in 2015 . In addition, she recently became politically active again and was a member of the Oslo City Council in 2015.

She died of some form of leukemia on December 24, 2015 .
