Gudmund Hernes (born March 25, 1941 in Trondheim ) is a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap) and professor of sociology . He was Minister of Church, Education and Research from 1990 to 1995 and Minister of Health from 1995 to 1997 .

Study and job

Hernes studied history from 1960 to 1961 at the Norges Lærerhøgskole Teachers College . In 1963 he studied social economics and 1964 sociology at the University of Oslo . Between 1969 and 1971 he was a lecturer at the University of Bergen . In 1971 he received his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University with a treatise on the balance of power in the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting . After that he was professor of sociology in Bergen until 1983.

In 1983 he became head of research at the Fagbevegelsens senter for forskning, utredning og dokumentasjon (FAFO), a research center of the Norwegian trade union federation Landsorganisasjonen i Norge (LO). From 1984 to 1989 he worked again at the University of Bergen. In 1986 and 1990 he was a visiting professor at Harvard University . Before he became minister, he moved to Oslo University in 1990.

Political career

Hernes was State Secretary in the Ministry of Planning from January 1980 to October 1981.

On November 3, 1990, he was appointed Minister in the Ministry of Education and Research, which in 1991 became the Ministry of Church, Education and Research. On December 22, 1995, he moved to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health as Minister of Health. He held the post until the end of the Jagland government on October 17, 1997.

In 1999 he became director of the UNESCO Institute for Educational Planning .

Awards

In 1982, Hernes was awarded an honorary doctorate from Umeå University . In 1989 he became a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences .
