Gunnar Berge (born August 29, 1940 in Etne ) is a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). He served as minister for a total of nine years.

Political career

Berge initially worked as an industrial worker in Stavanger from 1957 , where he also sat on the city council between 1963 and 1967. In addition, he was from 1965 to 1966 chairman of the Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF) in the province of Rogaland and from 1966 to 1967 secretary of the ap in Rogaland. Between 1970 and 1978 he led the Ap in Rogaland as its chairman.

In 1969 Berge moved into the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting , for the first time . There he represented his home province of Rogaland for a total of 24 years until 1993 and held various functions. Between January 1977 and September 1981 he was chairman of the finance committee. In addition, he was chairman of the Ap parliamentary group from November 1990 to September 1992, after having been a member of the parliamentary group's executive committee with interruptions since 1980.

On May 9, 1986, he was appointed Minister of Finance . He held this post until the end of the Brundtland II government on October 16, 1989. In the Brundtland III government he was again minister on September 4, 1992, this time for municipalities and labor. On October 25, 1996, he resigned from office. Between the two terms of office, he was deputy AP chairman.

After the end of his time in government, he worked until 2007 as head of the Oljedirektorat , the Norwegian agency responsible for regulating oil production. From 1997 to 2002 he was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee , from 2000 as chairman.
