Johan Jørgen Holst (born November 29, 1937 in Oslo , † January 13, 1994 in Nesodden ) was a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet .

Holst attended Oslo Katedralskole , one of Norway's oldest and most respected schools, where he graduated in 1956. After attending a Russian language school, he attended Columbia University , where he did his bachelor's degree in 1960 . In 1965 he earned a master's degree in political science from the University of Oslo .

From 1981 to 1986 Holst was director of the Norsk Utenrikspolitisk Institutt (NUPI, Norwegian Institute for Foreign Policy ). From 1986 to 1989 and from 1990 to 1993 he was Norwegian Defense Minister , from April 1993 until his death in 1994 as successor to Thorvald Stoltenberg's Foreign Minister of Norway. As Foreign Minister, Holst played a leading role in the negotiations in the Oslo peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. In the city of Gaza a park was named in his honor.

Holst's wife Marianne Heiberg was a sister of Karin Stoltenberg , so that Holst was a brother-in-law of his successor Thorvald Stoltenberg and uncle of the future Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg .

In December 1993, Holst suffered a minor stroke from which he did not recover. His wife later said he had worked his way to death in the peace process.
