Mary Kvidal

Mary Synnøve Kvidal (born July 4, 1943 in Malvik ) is a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap). From June 1988 to October 1989 she was the church and education minister in her country.

Origin and education

Kvidal worked as a teacher from 1965 . From 1976 she was part of the school management. She returned to her job after her time as a member of parliament and as a state secretary. Until 2005 she was the rector of Malvik.

Political career

In the period between 1976 and 1971 and between 1975 and 1979 Kvidal was a member of the local parliament of her home parish. Between 1987 and 1979 she sat in the Fylkesting of the former province of Sør-Trøndelag . From 1987 onwards, she was chairman of the Ap in the province for six years. Before that, she was deputy ap-chairwoman in Sør-Trøndelag for three years.

From 1985 to 1989 she was the so-called Vararepresentantin in the Norwegian parliament, the Storting . So she was not directly elected to parliament, but would have moved up if another member could no longer have represented his mandate. In the legislative period between 1989 and 1993 she had a permanent mandate in Storting.

On October 13, 1988, Kvidal was appointed Minister for Churches and Education in the Brundtland II government. She remained in office until the end of the government on October 16, 1989. She later became State Secretary. From January to October 1996 she was in the Ministry of Economics and Energy , and on November 1, 1996 she moved to the Ministry of Finance . As such she worked until October 17, 1997.
