Etne is a municipality in the very south of the Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Vestland . It borders on the municipalities of Kvinnherad , Ullensvang , Vindafjord and Sauda (the latter two in Rogaland ). The municipality belongs to the Haugaland landscape .

Around half of the population live in the villages of Etnesjøen and Skånevik.

The neighboring municipalities of Ølen and Vindafjord merged on January 1, 2006. The municipality of Etne was invited to take part in this merger, but has opted for further independence.

coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms symbolizes the two former municipalities Etne and Skånevik, which were merged to form Etne municipality in the mid-1960s. It was designed by Magnus Hardeland. But this died before the work was finished, and the coat of arms was therefore completed by John Digernes.

Attractions

The rock carvings on the Bruteigsteinen refer to the Bronze Age.

About 2 km from the center of Etnesjøen is Stødle Church, the oldest part of which dates from 1160. A wooden nave was added to the building in the 17th century. The church was the house chapel of the chief Erling Skakke , who resided on the farm of the same name .
