Austevoll is an island municipality in the Norwegian Fylke Vestland . It lies on the North Sea and is surrounded by the municipalities of Øygarden in the north, Bjørnafjorden in the northeast, Tysnes in the east and Fitjar in the south. The municipality consists of 667 large and small islands. The administrative center of the municipality is in Storebø, its largest town in terms of population.
For generations, fishing has been the municipality's main industry. Fish farming in the sea has been increasing since the 1980s and today the municipality is one of the largest salmon farms .
There is a fishing school in Austevoll and the Norwegian Marine Research Institute has a department in Austevoll. One of Norway's largest offshore supply shipping companies (District Offshore ASA) has its head office in Storebø .
On the small island of Store Marstein , which belongs to the municipality, stands the lighthouse Marstein fyr , built in 1877 , which marks the entrance to the Krossfjord and thus the southern approach to Bergen and the northern approach to the Hardangerfjord .
