history

Wreck position of U 864

Traces of human activity on Fedje go back around 4000 years. Around 1700 Fedje was an important trading center, where business was carried out on the small island of Kræmmerholmen . Kræmmerholmen reopened in 1991 and now houses a restaurant, hotel and museum.

During the Second World War , Fedje was occupied by over 300 Wehrmacht soldiers . Remnants of bunkers and cannons all over the island are reminiscent of this section of history .

On February 9, 1945, the British submarine HMS Venturer sank the German submarine U 864 west of the island . The wreck sank to a depth of 143 m. It was located in March 2003. Originally it was not supposed to be lifted because of the dangerous contents ( torpedoes and mercury ), but rather sealed with a concrete and sand cover. In January 2009, under pressure from numerous civil protests and environmental organizations, the Norwegian government decided to have the wreck lifted by the Dutch company Mammoet Salvage in 2010. However, the work had not started in September 2011.

Economy and Transport

Historically, fishing is the main industry. In the past, peat mining also played a role, but this stopped around 1920.

The municipality has no bridge connection to the mainland, so the journey depends on ferries and boats. The ferry connection to the mainland (20 trips per day) takes about half an hour.

geography

The highest point on Fedje is the 42 meter high mountain Fedjebjørnen . The largest lake is Storevatnet.

Islands

Unlike the main island of Fedje , the most famous smaller island is called Holmengrå . In Holmengrå there is the 35 meter high lighthouse Holmengrå fyr . In the southern part of Fedje called Stormark is the Hellisøy fyr lighthouse , which is probably the most famous feature of Fedje and was built in 1855. The 32.3 meter high tower is painted red and white. The islands of Fedje are all on the west side of the Fedjefjorden .

Sports

The main sport of Fedje is football , which can be played on the football field in the eastern part of the island. The soccer field is also the home field of the local soccer team called Fedje A-lag . The club currently plays in the Norwegian 6th division. Swimming is also popular, as there is a beach in Fedje, located in the center of the island on the banks of Husavatnet - Lake is located. The water is clean and brackish as there is a small opening to the sea that the tides wash with sea water from time to time.
