The minesweeper M 1 , under Kapitänleutnant Hans Bartels , and the 1st Schnellbootsflotille , under Kapitänleutnant Carl-Heinz Birnbacher , brought army troops up the Hardangerfjord and Eidfjord and reached Ulvik on April 25th. Shortly after the troops went ashore there, they came under fire from Norwegian soldiers. There was one dead and 12 wounded on the S-boats . Thereupon Bartels opened fire on the place in retaliation. What was not destroyed by the artillery bombardment was set on fire. 56 houses were destroyed and only the church, built in 1859, was spared. The residents were expelled and were only allowed to return months later.
