The Ulvikfjord

The Ulvikfjord ( Norwegian : Ulvikafjorden ) is a northern branch of the Osafjord , which in turn is a northern branch of the Hardangerfjord . He is, like the Osa, in its entirety on the territory of the municipality Ulvik in the Norwegian region Hardanger of Fylke Vestland .

geography

The place Ulvik

The fjord, the northern of the three easternmost foothills of the Hardangerfjord (Ulvikfjord, Osafjord and Eidfjord ), is around eight kilometers long and up to 900 m wide. It begins in the south between the Staursnes in the southwest and the tip of the Birjetangen peninsula in the northeast and extends from there about six kilometers to the north to the settlement center of Ulvik, Brakanes , where it merges into the two kilometers long and northeast running Ulvikapollen. The small island of Snauholm is located in Ulvikapollen.

Largest in the Ulvikfjord which opens watercourses is the Tysso , the North West and the lake empties Espelandsvatnet coming in Brakanes.

traffic

The Norwegian county road 572 begins in the south of the Riksvei 7 and the 2013 finished Hardangerbrua and runs along the West side of the fjord until after Brakanes where it leaves in the fjord and serpentine to the northwest and Granvin continues. From Ulvik the FV 300 goes along the north bank of the fjord and further east to the Osafjord. The FV 301 branches off from the Fv 300 and leads above the eastern bank to the southwest to the settlement of Hjeltnes and from there further south to the Birjetangen peninsula.

Cruise ships run regularly in Ulvikfjord and to Ulvik, whose center “Brakanes” has become a popular tourist destination.

History

The center of the village of Ulvik, Brakanes ( 60 ° 34 ′  N , 6 ° 55 ′  E ), was completely destroyed by German invasion troops on April 25, 1940 during World War II. The minesweeper M 1 , under Kapitänleutnant Hans Bartels , and the 1st Schnellbootsflotille , under Kapitänleutnant Carl-Heinz Birnbacher , brought army troops up the Hardangerfjord and Eidfjord and reached Ulvik on April 25th. Shortly after the troops went ashore there, they came under fire from Norwegian soldiers. There was one dead and 12 wounded on the S-boats . Thereupon Bartels opened fire on the place in retaliation. What was not destroyed by the artillery bombardment was set on fire. 56 houses were destroyed, and only the church, built in 1859, was spared. The residents were expelled and were only allowed to return months later.
