Since the north-east of the island is inaccessible mountains, it has two separate road networks. The much larger one opens up the municipality of Osterøy and the south of the part of the island belonging to Vaksdal. It only received a permanent connection to the mainland in 1997 with the completion of the Osterøy Bridge ( Osterøybroen ) across the eastern end of the Sørfjord. At the other end of the bridge there is a stop for the Bergen Railway . The northern network, only about 10 km long, consists of a road with a few short spur roads that has been linked to the mainland by the bridge over the Kallestadsund since 1985.

Far in the south of the island is the Havrå farm , also called Havretunet , today a museum, one of the best preserved individual farms in Western Norway .
