Alver is a municipality in Fylke Vestland, Norway . It was created in the course of local government reform in Norway on January 1, 2020 by merging Lindås , Meland and Radøy . Its administrative headquarters are in Knarvik .
geography
The municipality is located in the west of the Fylke directly on the coast. It borders in the north-west on Fedje and Austrheim , in the north on Gulen and Masfjorden , in the north-east on Modalen , in the east on Vaksdal and Osterøy , in the south on Bergen and Askøy and in the west on Øygarden , with borders only to Austrheim, Masfjorden and Modalen Land exist.
The coast is strongly divided by fjords, a large part of the municipality is located on peninsulas and islands between the Austfjord in the north, the Oster and Herdlefjord in the south and the Hjeltefjord in the west. The mountains rise in the northeast of the municipality up to 957 moh. high Sørdalsnuten.
Of the 977.36 km² area, 679.05 km² are land and 298.3 km² are water areas.
Surname
The name is derived from the farm name "Alver", which gave the place Alversund north of Knarvik and the local strait Alverstraumen, the connection between Radfjord and Radsund, the name. Alversund is near the point where the three original municipalities met.
