history

Meland became its own municipality in 1923. Part of Holsnøy and smaller parts of Askøy Island got the name Meland Kommune. The name Meland is derived from the parish of the same name, whose church is in the village of Meland in the interior of the island of Holsnøy . During the municipal reform in 1964, Meland Flatøy took over from the old Hamre municipality and areas in the north of Holsnøy from the old Herdla municipality. The island of Askøy was given to the Askøy municipality .
