history

Ask church in Askøy

When the border was regulated in 1964, Askøy Municipality got parts of the old Herdla herad and the parts of Meland Municipality that were on the island of Askøy.

From 1837 to 1918 Laksevåg was part of Askøy Municipality on the mainland.

Name and coat of arms

The name Askøy comes from the Ask farm on the east side of the island, which in turn takes its name from the tree species ash . The municipal coat of arms shows a green ash tree on a silver background, which stands on an island with the sea in the foreground. It was approved by the local government on September 28, 1961.

Askøy Bridge

There is a speedboat from Kleppestø that takes 10 minutes to the center of Bergen.

In 1992 the Askøy Bridge ( Askøybrua ) was opened, which is now the main connection to Bergen. Due to the much simplified connection to Bergen, Askøy is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Norway in terms of population.
